How to Read Your Kundali: A Beginner's Guide to Lagna, Houses and Dasha
The first time most people see their kundali, it looks like a diamond full of numbers and two-letter abbreviations. It's less cryptic than it looks. This guide walks through the five things worth understanding first, in the order an astrologer would read them.
1. What you need to make one
Date of birth, exact time of birth, and place of birth. The time matters most: the ascendant (lagna) changes roughly every two hours, and the house positions shift with it. If your time is uncertain by more than 15–20 minutes, treat house-level readings with caution. You can generate a free chart in North or South Indian style with a free online Kundali maker.
2. The lagna (ascendant): your starting point
In the North Indian chart, the top-centre diamond is always the 1st house, and the number written in it is your lagna sign (1 = Aries, 2 = Taurus … 12 = Pisces). Everything else is counted from here, anticlockwise. In the South Indian chart, signs are fixed and the lagna is marked with a line or "Asc".
Many people know their Sun sign from Western astrology; in Jyotish the lagna and Moon sign matter more for day-to-day reading.
3. The twelve houses, in one line each
- 1st: self, body, personality
- 2nd: family, speech, savings
- 3rd: siblings, courage, short travel
- 4th: mother, home, vehicles, peace of mind
- 5th: children, intelligence, romance
- 6th: health problems, debts, competitors
- 7th: spouse, partnerships
- 8th: longevity, sudden events, research
- 9th: father, luck, dharma, long journeys
- 10th: career, status
- 11th: gains, income, friends
- 12th: expenses, foreign lands, moksha
A planet in a house colours that area of life; the lord of a house (the planet ruling the sign there) shows where that area's results get channelled.
4. Dasha: when things happen
A chart shows potential; the Vimshottari dasha shows timing. It's a 120-year cycle of planetary periods (Sun 6 years, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, Venus 20), starting from the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth. Each period (mahadasha) has sub-periods (antardasha). If someone says "I'm running Saturn–Mercury", that's what they mean. You can see your current periods on a Vimshottari dasha calculator.
5. Doshas: read them in context
Terms like Mangal dosha, Kaal Sarp and Sade Sati cause a lot of worry. Most classical texts list several cancellation conditions for each, and a dosha in one chart is often balanced by the other in matchmaking. Before panicking, check whether the condition actually applies. For marriage, compare both charts together through Kundali Milan (Ashtakoota matching) rather than judging one chart alone.
A sensible way to start
- Note your lagna sign and Moon sign.
- See which houses your Moon and lagna lord sit in.
- Check your current mahadasha and antardasha.
- Read about those two planets' placement. That's usually where the "this year" story is.
That's enough to follow most conversations with an astrologer, and to ask better questions.
