What Is Choghadiya? How to Read Today's Good and Bad Times
If you've ever seen a shopkeeper in Gujarat or Rajasthan wait half an hour before opening a new account book, they were probably waiting for a good Choghadiya. It's one of the simplest timing systems in Vedic astrology, simple enough to read on your phone, and this guide explains how it works.
What Choghadiya means
"Chau" means four and "ghadiya" refers to the ghati, an old Indian unit of about 24 minutes. A Choghadiya is roughly four ghatis, about 90 minutes. The day (sunrise to sunset) is split into 8 Choghadiyas and the night (sunset to next sunrise) into another 8. Because day length changes through the year, each slot is a bit longer than 90 minutes in summer days and shorter in winter.
The seven types, and which are good
| Choghadiya | Ruling planet | Nature | Traditionally good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amrit | Moon | Best | Almost anything auspicious |
| Shubh | Jupiter | Good | Ceremonies, marriage, education |
| Labh | Mercury | Good | Business, starting study, purchases |
| Char | Venus | Neutral | Travel, movement |
| Udveg | Sun | Unfavourable | Government work only, per some traditions |
| Kaal | Saturn | Unfavourable | Avoid new beginnings |
| Rog | Mars | Unfavourable | Avoid new beginnings |
How the order is decided
The first day-Choghadiya belongs to the planet that rules the weekday: Sunday starts with Udveg (Sun), Monday with Amrit (Moon), Tuesday with Rog (Mars), and so on. After that the sequence follows a fixed cycle. You don't need to memorise it; the point is that the same clock time has a different Choghadiya on different weekdays and in different cities, because sunrise moves. A table printed for Mumbai is wrong for Delhi by several minutes, sometimes more.
How to read it in practice
- Find today's sunrise and sunset for your city.
- Look for Amrit, Shubh or Labh windows that fit your schedule.
- Cross-check that the window doesn't overlap Rahu Kaal. Many people treat Rahu Kaal as overriding a good Choghadiya.
The quickest way is to open a city-specific table, such as this today's Choghadiya for your city, which calculates from local sunrise rather than a fixed chart.
Choghadiya vs Hora vs Muhurat
These get mixed up a lot:
- Choghadiya: 8 + 8 slots, quick and practical, popular in western India for day-to-day starts.
- Hora: 24 planetary hours per day, each ruled by one planet. Useful when an activity matches a planet, e.g. Mercury hora for paperwork. See a Hora table.
- Muhurat: a full election that also checks tithi, nakshatra, yoga and the lagna. Used for marriages, griha pravesh and other major events.
Rule of thumb: use Choghadiya for everyday "when should I start this?" questions, and a proper muhurat for life events.
A few common questions
Does Choghadiya matter for online purchases? Traditionally it applies to starting an action, so many people use it for placing an order or signing a document, not just physical events.
Is night Choghadiya used? Yes, especially for Diwali Lakshmi Puja, which happens after sunset.
What if no good slot fits my schedule? Char is acceptable for most routine tasks; just avoid Kaal and Rog for anything new.
